Eye Hospital

The Lions’ International Club has helped Anandwan establish a fully furnished Eye Hospital with equipment of global standard. Efficiently managed by resident Ophthalmologist Dr. Shabbir and his team of six nursing staff, The Anandwan Eye Hospital is the only charitable eye hospital in the whole of Vidarbha.
The hospital conducts daily OPD and refraction procedures for the residents of Anandwan and surrounding villages. Saturdays and Sundays are reserved for corrective eye surgery performed by a team of specialist ophthalmologists from the Kasturba Hospital, Sewagram, Wardha.
Many people in India go blind because they don’t get their cataract removed in time. It’s a tragedy when blindness is caused by something so preventable. It is to avert precisely this tragedy that The Anandwan Eye Hospital, in association with other supporting organizations, is rendering medical service free of cost to rural Maharashtra.
Every year from December 10-14, a large Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) Transplant eye camp is co-organized by Anandwan, ‘I Care’ (a Mumbai-based organization, part of the Zubedabai Akberally Zaveri Trust), the Bohra Samaj and a team of doctors, led by Dr. Lahane and Dr. Ragini from the Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai. Corrective Cataract (Safed Motia) surgery is performed in this camp.
Intra Ocular Lens implantation and Phaco emulsification procedures are undertaken extensively. The surgeries being sutureless, the J.J. Hospital team manages to send the patient back to work within seven days as against the traditional method of cataract surgery which requires a forty day recovery period which the rural folk can ill afford.
